2010 Great Escape Workshops

 

Session A: Saturday - 9:15 – 10:45


A1 Free Time: Snack, play cards, sleep, hike, make new friends, relax….the choice is yours.

A2 Beeswax: Beeswax is the easiest and most beautiful sculptural material for children and adults to use. It is non-toxic, versatile and has been used for centuries to create amazing items. Learn how to use beeswax for creative projects with your girls. Participants will create their own candle (or other craft) during the session. Fee $5. Presenter: Deb Holland

A3 CSI Wabasso: Does your favorite TV show involve crime scenes and witty banter about blood spatter? In this workshop we will learn and practice forensic techniques, such as fingerprinting, DNA extraction, ink chromatography, sketching suspects, and more. Presenter: Sue Stewart

A4 Luminarias - Warli Art style: Using scissors, contact paper, permanent markers and your imagination, create weather proof luminarias for your garden, outdoor table or patio. All materials are recycles. Presenter: Kaye Glass FULL

A5 Felting: Try Needle Felting and learn about different felting techniques. Turn colorful wool roving into a medallion or flower which can be used as an ornament or pin or attached to clothing or an accessory. Materials will be provided. Fee $1. Presenter: Sally Bond

A6 Mini Scrapbooking: Learn how to make a mini-scrapbook that can be given as a gift or kept for your own treasured memories. Mini scrapbooks are a great way to express your own creativity. Mini scrapbook albums are perfect for theme type albums, and are an easy project for your troop. Bring 6-8 photos depicting a theme, special person, event, vacation, etc. If you have a portable paper cutter and scissors, please bring them, but some will be available to share. Supplies and tools will be provided. Fee $3. Presenter: Sue Kohlman

A7 Reduce/Reuse/Recycle – Make your own shopping bag(s): Help reduce the use of plastic bags. Make your own shopping bag(s) out of canvas, denim or duck cloth. No previous sewing experience necessary. Needed materials: Sewing machine (please bring one if possible; there will be two sewing machines available for use by people who do not have one) You can bring your own supplies (canvas or other heavy materials - 1 yard of 60 “ wide cloth will make 2 bags, 1 yard of webbing for handles (per bag), heavy weight thread, quilting pins) or participants may choose to purchase a set of supplies at a cost of $3.50 per bag. Session B: Saturday - 11:00 – 12:30


B1 Free Time: Snack, play cards, sleep, hike, make new friends, relax….the choice is yours.

B2 High Tech Hide and Seek: Did you know that there is "treasure" hidden around you? Come experience the sport of geocaching! In geocaching, people hide caches in different locations and supply GPS coordinates and clues to help you find them. Learn how to use a handheld GPS, find out how to locate local caches, and head out of camp to seek a few of the caches hidden around Bradford. Please bring a handheld GPS if you have one. B3 Quilling: Colorful paper strips and glue turn into swirls, curls and teardrops that become lovely greeting cards, wall hangings and gifts. Portable and troop affordable craft. Recycling included. Presenter: Kaye Glass

B4 Good Eats at Camp: Are you tired of cooking in the rain? Does your food fall off your stick? Cooking at camp doesn't mean cold soup and pb&j anymore. Join us in learning the true meaning of "Gracious Living in the Outdoors," with Dutch oven and box oven cooking. These methods are considered "advanced," but are so easy and fun, you'll have your campers cooking up a gourmet meal fit for a queen! Your troop will be cooking like Paula Deen and Rachael Ray in no time! We'll teach you easy tips and techniques for choosing recipes, planning your meals and engaging the girls. Take home a box oven (and some yummy recipes). Bring your own box (we'll e-mail you dimensions and instructions beforehand.) Cost of materials: $2. Presenters: Pat Gardner & Paula Ruozzi

Session C: Saturday - 2:15 – 4:15


C1 Free Time: Snack, play cards, sleep, hike, make new friends, relax….the choice is yours.

C2 Flag Retirement 101: When the United States flag becomes too worn or tattered to fly anymore, it is time for the flag to be retired. Come join us for a formal flag retirement ceremony that you can take home and share with your Girl Scouts. Please bring any American flags that you might have which need to be retired. Presenters: Sarah Leshay and Amy Svedberg

C3 “Canoe Canoe”: Learn the fundamentals of paddling and enjoy a quiet spin around the pond! Relaxation is our focus as we give pointers and answer questions about how canoeing can be an empowering experience for our girls. All participants will be provided with canoe, paddle, personal floatation device (PFD) and instructions. Fee $5. Presenters: Paula Ruozzi and Pat Gardner

C4 International Songs and Games: Promoting the international idea of Girl Scouting, learn songs and games from around the world. Some songs just brought back from the UK! Great troop program enhancers. Presenter: Kaye Glass

C5 Delectable Dutch Oven Desserts: Learn how to cook with a dutch oven and maybe a box oven to create wonderful desserts for Saturday night. Presenter: Lesley Murray

C6 Flytying to Die For: Learn how to tie simple flies, used in fishing, then make jewelry from them. Pins, earrings, and hatpins are some of the items we'll be making. Fee $2. Presenter: Georgette Henrich

C7 Knit a Hat: Knit a warm winter hat in 2 hours on circular needles with bulky yarn. No previous experience necessary. Materials needed: circular needles, bulky yarn. Presenter: Jane Foulkes

Session D: Saturday - 4:30 – 5:30


D1 Free Time: Snack, play cards, sleep, hike, make new friends, relax….the choice is yours.

D2 Where the Wild Things Eat: Come out and enjoy a stroll in the New Hampshire woods. While on our journey we will learn about plants, flowers, trees, native herbs and simple wild edibles. We will collect some samples and make some basic teas, which can be enjoyed all year round. The only thing required is an open mind. Presenter: Mel Hurley

D3 Intro to Birding: Learn how to get started in birding, a fast growing outdoor activity. Learn what equipment you need and how to pick it out. Basic bird identification will also be taught. If you have binoculars, please bring them. Fee $2.00. Presenter: Laura Lane

D5 Learn to Crochet: Enjoy a relaxing afternoon and learn to crochet in our small class. Personalized instruction. Please bring a size G or H crochet hooks, a skein of 4ply yarn and scissors. Presenters: Brenda and Jen Briggs

D6 FleeceTurkey Tie Pillow: Celebrate Thanksgiving with this thoughtful craft kit! Featuring beautiful fall leaves, this throw pillow will add a touch of autumn to your sofa or bed. A great gift for family members! Unfinished, 17". Fee $4.00. Presenter: Janey Eymbro

D7 Introduction to the Joy of Yoga: Hatha Yoga is a system of physical poses which stretch, strengthen and enhance muscles and internal systems for optimal health and longevity. The three foundations of "Yoga" are: (1) Proper breathing techniques, (2) body awareness through postures and (3) balance exercises. Postures can be modified if needed. The instructor, Bev Robbins-Gordonm, has been teaching for 30 years in the Adult Education Program for Acton. You will learn to truly relax as we lie quietly and Bev will help you let go of stress through guided imagery techniques. Beautiful music with environmental sounds will enhance your whole experience. Participants should wear loose clothing and bring a mat or towel. Presenter: Bev Robbins-Gordonm

E2 Ready-Aim-Shoot: An introduction to archery. Have fun learning to shoot for the first time, or practice your skills. You will learn the basics, safety, the equipment and why girls love the sport. Maybe even have a little competition. Presenter: Lesley Murray

E3 Tank and T-Shirt Handbags: Do you have more T-Shirts than you can wear? Turn them into fun, decorative, and usable bags WITH NO SEWING. Bring as many shirts as you like AND a pair of sharp scissors. Presenter: Mary Ellen (MEL) Hurley
